2015 Ford Edge

If there's one thing that Ford does well, it's family cars. The Model T, Model A, Galaxy, LTD, Taurus, Explorer; all best sellers. Ford seems to understand what most Americans want/need in a family vehicle. Then they usually take it one step further, creating some new benchmark for the segment.

The 2015 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover, designed to fill the slot left by the upsized Ford Explorer. It outsells nearly everything else in the segment, including the Toyota Highlander, and Nissan Murano. Two of the nicer choices in midsize SUVLand.

Part of the Edge's, well, edge, is it's brilliantly modern approach to transportation. It looks like a piece of urban art. The inside looks like a Best Buy lobby. And it drives way too good to be called a 'family truckster'. The 2015 Ford Edge wasn't designed by a focus group. It's simply what Ford thinks Middle America should be driving.

The 2015 Ford Edge doesn't pretend to be an off roader, or a pseudo-luxury vehicle. It's a downtown condo, with 4 wheels attached. The Edge is willfully different, and its customer base seems to find that refreshing.

2015 Ford Edge - Notables

Since the Edge is Ford's interpretation of a modern SUV, it brimming with tech. Absolutely brimming. If you want 'simple' & 'easy-to-operate', this crossover ain't for you.

The gauges aren't gauges at all. They're part of a customizable LCD display that can be controlled by the many buttons on the steering wheel. And yes, there's lots of menus. Same with the HVAC controls, they live on a page hidden in the touchscreen Sync system. Or, you can adjust the temperature with the maddeningly tiny and uselessly sensitive touchpad buttons on the center stack. But you better take your gloves off first.

When you're driving the 2015 Ford Edge, you won't care about the Geekified controls. Just mash the throttle and carve up whatever happens to be in your way. The suspension, steering, and brakes are brilliantly responsive. And the engines complement the chassis perfectly.

The base 285-hp 3.5 V6 can pack a punch. The 305-hp 3.7 V6 owns the interstate. But it's only available in the torturously uncomfortable (see: avoid) 2015 Ford Edge Sport. And the 240-hp 2.0 EcoBoost actually does give you V6 power and 4-pot economy (21 city / 30 hwy / 24 comb).

2015 Ford Edge - Changes

Since the 2015 Ford Edge was already a strong seller, they didn't need to make a whole lot of changes to this year's model. But they added a Sport Mode to the 6-speed SelectShift transmission (standard on all but the 2015 Ford Edge EcoBoost) to speed up gear changes. All-Wheel Drive is now optional on the base 2015 Ford Edge SE. New shades were added to the color pallet. And the popular 2015 Ford Edge SEL can now be outfitted with a sporty looking appearance pack that includes a body-colored grill, special headlights / tail lights, black 20-inch rims, and black leather seats with gray Alcantara suede inserts.

In a Nutshell

The 2015 Ford Edge is a delightfully unique crossover that removes the 'boring' from family transport. Sure, you might need your 12 year old to turn on the heater for you. But once he's explained everything to you, you might start to like all that whiz-bangery. Plus, it drives better than any midsize SUV has a right to.
